DirectedbyJosephNewman,andbasedonastorybymysterywriterJohnDicksonCarr,DangerousCrossingmaybethe24thentryinFox'snewlyexhumedFilmNoirseries,butpuristswillfindthatdefinitionstretchedabittoincludethistitle.ThoughNewmandoesimbuetheoceanlinerwithanatmosphereofdread,withitsendlesscorridors,foggydecks,andeventheoccasional,subtleup-and-downshiftingoftheframetosimulatethequeasinessofseatravel,hedoesn'ttakefulladvantage.DangerousCrossinglacksthehardboilededgeorblackenedmoralitythatisnormallyfoundonnoirishstreets.Plus,someofthemoreseasonedpurveyorsofthegenrewithastrongersenseofthegrotesquewouldhaveneverthrownaHalloweenpartyonboardwithoutusingmasksandhiddenidentitiestotakeadvantageofthenoirthemeofreinvention.It'slikeMr.Arkadinputononeofhiscostumepartiesandeveryoneshowedupintheirregularclothes. Yet,ifyou'renotbuggedbymisplacedtagsandwantasolidblack-and-whitesuspensefilm,DangerousCrossingshoulddothetrick.JeanneCrainmakesforanexcellentlosing-her-mindheroine,andthescriptshouldkeepyouguessingrightupuntilthebigreveal.
